How hotline works?

All incoming information will be collected by Safe Internet Operator, who will examine individually every report and determine the level of harmfulness. If the content is harmful (to children), but not illegal, the administration of the site is being informed  and is asked to evaluate the appropriateness of the materials for children/yougsters. However, if the reported breach is an infringement of law, and appears to be hosted in Latvia then the State Police is informed. The State Police continues to examine the specific case and inflict a penalty as stated by the law. In doubtful cases there are consultations with experts State children rights protection bodies, Latvian Centre for Human rights, etc.
Every informant according to their own free choice can provide contact details so that Safe Internet Operator would be able to inform them about the course of development of processing the harmful information. Provided contact details will in no case be passed on to the third party and they will be protected as stipulated by the law.

It is also possible to report on a breach in a server of another country. This information will be passed on to the State police and Hotline operator of the respective country – a member of INHOPE network (www.inhope.org).

IMPORTANT: All information that is gathered while processing the messages will be entered in the Hotline data base and will be kept there for six months. Then it will be erased in accordance with the Personal data protection law of the Republic of Latvia. The provided information is considered to be confidential and it will not be revealed to the third party without the consent of the informant. (Exception: authorities that will check the information)

Net- Safe Latvia hotline is a member of INHOPE association, and all members of INHOPE have to comply with the Code of Practice.
